Madura Fashion & Lifestyle, a division of ABFRL, is a true Indian icon. It was the first player operating on a national scale, dedicated to the core business of fashion retail in India.

Originally known as Madura Garments, MF&L was born in 1988 at the cusp of the unshackling of the Indian economy. Fashion in those days was not what the consumer's aspirations merited. Madura became a partner of the new Indian in this journey of self-discovery.

To meet consumers' aspirations, MF&L had to create a complete end-to-end, demand-driven, manufacturing-to-retail ecosystem in India. MF&L has a vast retail network comprising exclusive outlets, premium multi-brand stores and department stores.

Four of its brands are among India's top fashion names, with MRP sales well in excess of INR 1000 crores each. Louis Philippe led the aspiration for fashion excellence, giving its customers access to the finest in global fashion.

Van Heusen focused on empowering the fashion ambitious professional partnering his career ambitions with power dressing. Allen Solly was for those looking for a smart fashion alternative. It came out with the concept of Friday Dressing.

Peter England with its promise of honest-to-goodness prices emerged the favourite for a large mass of first jobbers.

Brand extensions to new categories – including sportswear, footwear, bags & accessories – have been at the core of MFL's leadership in its segments

MF & L brands have also established strong roots in womenswear and are getting popular in kidswear as well.

The company also houses a range of other fashion formats – Planet Fashion, The Collective and Hackett London.

Planet Fashion is a multi-brand, apparel-retailing format that houses MF&L's in-house brands and some significant others.

The company's premium lifestyle store, The Collective, offers a unique blend of global fashion, international trends and luxury customer services to customers.

MF&L has entered into the luxury mono brand business in India and through a joint venture introduced the quintessential British men's luxury brand Hackett London into India.

  • Aditya Birla Nuvo Limited consolidates its Branded Apparels Businesses under listed subsidiary — Pantaloons Fashion & Retail Limited (PFRL). The Board of PFRL approves PFRL to be renamed as ‘Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Limited’ (“ABFRL”)

Madura Fashion & Lifestyle has not just developed fashion retail in India, it also pioneered apparel manufacturing in India. At the heart of this revolution has been its state-of-the-art factories. In the early '90s, moving beyond an era of export-based apparel production where what Indian companies made was based on the buyer's perceptions and decisions on what they could make. MF&L created an eco-system where it manufactured fashion according to its own forecasts based on Indian consumer needs and demands.

MF&L factories have been at the cutting edge of Indian fashion innovation. They source fabrics, technologies and ingredients globally. Charged with churning out the latest finishes, fabrics and fits, they have mastered the art of employing technologies that deliver the chosen product innovations and value proposition.


MF&L factories work closely with the ABFRL Knowledge Management Center, the Technology Management Center and the PDQAC to religiously imbibe fashion manufacturing excellence and create the finest collections of India's largest fashion brands. Not surprisingly, Madura Fashion & Lifestyle is also a chosen global supplier for premium international brands such as Esprit, S'Oliver, MONOPRIX, etc. Every Madura factory is independently audited by the International Textile Services (ITS) and Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) for international clients.

Along the journey Madura Fashion & Lifestyle became the first-ever apparel company to successfully implement the SAP ERP system. It is also the first company globally to integrate Retek ERP with SAP ERP. Madura F&L today has won ISO/IEC 27001:2005 accreditation. Its manufacturing division recently became the first apparel manufacturing unit to win one of India's most prestigious quality excellence awards, the Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality award, instituted jointly by the Indian Merchants Chamber and the house of Bajaj. Madura F&L sources are all Factory Act compliant.

Established in 1988 by Madura Coats Limited, Madura Fashion & Lifestyle has its origins in the erstwhile Coats Viyella Plc, a European company with a rich heritage dating to the 1750s.

In December 1999, with Coats exiting the apparel manufacturing business, Aditya Birla Nuvo, an Aditya Birla Group company, acquired MF&L. A year later it became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aditya Birla Nuvo.

In 2015, MF&L and Aditya Birla Group's other fashion arm, Pantaloons, were merged into a new entity, the Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Limited (ABFRL)—India's largest pure play fashion retail organisation, a move with several significant goals and advantages.
